Motivate your Team the LEGO® Serious Play® Way

Team energy isn’t always on an upward trend. Teams go through phases where they simply feel lacking in motivation. They are sometimes just ‘flat’.

There could well be deeper reasons as to why the team isn’t firing on all cylinders and these are worth exploring through different channels such as one on one coaching or conversations.

One quick fix to lift energy levels is to use the LEGO® Serious Play® method.

The process has been around for well over 20 years and has many different applications in a whole range of contexts.  One great use case for the method is to facilitate a session with a team that isn’t as enthusiastic as they used to be in the past.

Here’s why LEGO® Serious Play® works so well in this type of situation:

  • As soon as you bring out the bricks, people are reminded of the joy they experienced in their childhood when they played with bricks. This sets up a positive tone immediately in the room. Faces light up and there are genuine smiles.
  • As people begin to build their own individual models, they use their hands. The more they use their hands, the more ideas emerge. The models are visual, 3D representations of thoughts, ideas and points of view that might otherwise be challenging to express.
  • There is a sense of fun in the initial stages and this brings a strong sense of psychological safety into the room. People know that they can freely express what they are thinking without fear of criticism.
  • Everyone builds and everyone tells the story of what they have built. This ensures that there is full participation from 100% of the people. No loudmouths to shut down the quieter ones in the group.  Everyone has an equal opportunity to talk and this in itself makes the process fully inclusive.
  • Participants don’t have to try to figure out what they want to say. As they build their model, the story of what they want to express emerges easily. This means that they tell their point of view readily and this inclusive process of story-telling in itself has a healing effect.
  • Team members listen to each other’s stories. This sets a strong foundation for ongoing communication. Listening is after all not always something that team members remember to do all the time.
  • The LEGO® Serious Play® process enables you to probe deeper if you want to as to the reasons why motivation has been low. The process also enables you to set up a plan so that there can be changes to help the team maintain high energy levels.

And yes, the process works well for both in-person teams and for remote groups via Teams or Zoom.
